How To Protect Your Crib Or Twin Mattress
A good mattress can set you back a couple of hundred dollars. Now, you wouldn't want it soaked with urine, I'm sure. The solution: Get a waterproof mattress pad.
Making The Mattress Lasts
Bear in mind that a crib mattress may have to last you a few years if you are not thinking of transferring your baby to a twin size bed at an early age. If you have bought a convertible crib or is planning to buy a toddler bed, then the crib mattress would be needed for at least 4 years. Therefore, protect it by buying a waterproof mattress pad or mattress protector because accidents are bound to happen even if your baby is constantly in diapers.
Toilet-Training Phase
If you are getting your toddler onto a twin bed, then the more reason you should invest in a good mattress pad. Because a twin size mattress can last much longer than a crib mattress, it is only imperative that you maintain its cleanliness and hygiene. Moving a toddler to a bed also often coincides with the toilet-training phase. And at some point, you will have to train her to go without diapers for the night. This is when a mattress pad is really handy to keep your mattress dry and clean during the training phase.
Disposal Underpads
The other alternative to a waterproof mattress pad is to get disposal underpads. The good thing about a disposable pad is it saves you the work and hassle of changing the sheet should your toddler ends up wetting the bed. After all, you wouldn't want to start pulling out the sheets and mattress pad and putting in fresh ones in the middle of the night when you are dying for some sleep.
I have tried using disposable underpads for my toddler so, I can give you one word of caution. They would only work if your child doesn't move much when sleeping and can, more or less, stay in one position. If your toddler tends to end up at the foot of the bed by morning, you are better off getting a reusable waterproof mattress pad. At least, the whole mattress can be safely protected and it will cost you less in the long-run compared to disposable underpads.
